Client: Paarl Boys High-School SGB
Location: Paarl – South Africa
Completed: Design Study
Gross area: N/A
Project Type: Urban Planning
The Paarl Boys High-School’s SGB invited a number of practices to present various design proposals for the conversion of the Klein Parys Farmland bordering the Berg River into a multi-use sports precinct for all the various schools based in Paarl. The precinct included a main rugby stadium for 15000 spectators, a cricket oval, 14 tennis courts, a swimming and waterpolo pool, 7 additional rugby fields and 4 additional cricket ovals. The positioning of the buildings was dictated by the MSL flood-levels of the Berg river. Original vineyards were retained as part of the acknowledgment of the historical context.
Tree-lined boulevards linked the various facilities with ample parking to accomodate the many spectators. Unfortunately the land-locked site inhibited functional access from Van Riebeeck Drive across the adjacent railway line.
