The Jan Van Riebeeck High School’s governing body instructed JLB Architects to design and implement a phased contruction roll-out of an upgrade to the negative space between the historical Welgemeend Homestead (circa 1693) and the main school building. The space was originally a run-down tarred, barren space and was to improved for the school’s centenary upgrades programme. A new access was created to direct foot-traffic by means of a large public staircase, enhancing the usability and access to this new “Studente-Plein”. Along the linear access, archways have been used to denote places of entry into both the school and the Welgemeend building. Further additions of the programme include an amphitheatre for outdoor performances, the planting of trees and the upgrading of the exisiting girl’s hostel.
